The Lamp Lighter

Welcome to the bitter fantasy
if misery loves company then be my guest.
All around, victims of beauty
a tomb embellished to impress
she will hold the torch unto you
to shine a light on what you keep
like a moth unto the candle drawn
slavishly awake from sleep
She bids me goodnight
and she turns out the light
my face is turned into my pillow in fear
I must look away
for what re-lights the flame
could be the same monster I fled drawing near
Come now, child, sing me your darkest songs
I promise I won't stop your screams
we wear our separate masks and paint our faces grey
already dead or so it seems
She bids me goodnight
and she turns out the light
my face is turned into my pillow in fear
I must look away
for what re-lights the flame
could be the same monster I fled drawing near
She bids me goodnight
and she turns out the light
my face is turned into my pillow in fear
Paralyzed and remote
fingers curl 'round my throat
she sits on my chest and she drinks from my tears

Parlour Trick

This was a test to weigh my options
you make it so easy it can't be true
I rip the page off line for line (word for word)
cut and stitch to make it fit to you.
do you think you're something else
besides a character I've read about a thousand times?
it's the same old name recycled and reused
and brother I'd be the first one to say
told you so.
This was a test and you failed it.
and there were so many ways to get it right.
convince yourself I must be wrong
whatever helps you sleep at night
So step right up to exhibit 1
a vivisection has begun
a moment of silence for the art
of telling the lies and the magic apart
it's the same old song and dance
but I guess that makes no difference
as long as you got what you paid for but remember:
Whether you're in a field or on your throne, we all end up as desiccated bones.

Once you shone like the meridian sun
Golden, Bleeding
now it sets over what time has done
Vultures Feeding
A faded voice from the red land howls its pain
as the work of nature removes its stain
There is one of you that yet survives
in the Chaos Scheming
And timeless invocations fall upon the ears
of the Ibis Dreaming
Idle tongues are choking on ancient spells
but if we know you then we know ourselves
Your shrine is vacant
But that doesn't mean the gods are gone for good
Your lesson's waiting
on the altar of the hours steeped in blood
(An aria asfet! An auau-a! An tau-a! An smam-a ret sep sen! An het tebh! An xebt-a!)
And you will witness
as the palaces all turn a shade of rust
though your stories still remain
your faces and your names
like your monuments have crumbled into dust.

The hands of a child reach out and touch the barrier between the times
A simple act before crossing sempiternal lines
waiting here inside . . .
Here in this place among the artefacts
the lessons are alive
the essence has survived in those who step inside
Here in this place a graven image rests
work of human hands
resurrection from the sands I begin to understand . . .
The hands of the scribe are still as the inscription in the stone
a simple answer just on the cusp of the unknown
waiting here inside
awake your weary mind
was that your answer in the silence unperceived?
could it be I've been deceived?
was that the reason I can't bring myself to leave?
show me and I will believe
open the door
I kneel before
one step more
the eternals come
Here in this place are the sleeping gods
awakened to the sound
can these wings that we have found leave this rotten ground?
Here in this place among forgotten works
hear the whispers of the sands
as they're slipping through your hands
now you understand.
